From Quiet to Confident: Embracing the Power of Inquiry

When I was starting my career, I didn’t ask questions and get the clarify nearly enough. I assumed my manager and colleagues knew exactly what they were doing but they didn’t always have the answers. This isn’t a jab at them—it’s just that sometimes, people don’t fully grasp what they’re asking for either.

That’s why you must ask “why” and seek clarification constantly. Don’t be afraid to speak up, no matter the meeting, environment, or your fear of sounding silly. Developing the skill to think on your feet takes time, and I wish I had started honing it much earlier. Your future self will thank you if you start practicing this now.

I’m the type who likes to mull things over and I’m upfront about it. But sometimes, you need to dive deep into a topic on the spot, and that’s a skill you build over time. Some may have it naturally but not with me. I would have appreciated having this ability when reviewing creative work for the first time or when new strategies were presented that impacted my plans.

Communication is a big thing in what we do, so use it to your advantage and get the clarity you need.
